Hi All,

Well another Fly Nationals has been run and won.  Great weather and a well run shoot thanks to Dave Groves and the SSAA Canberra team for a terrific weekend.

Saturday was the 500m Nationals and Sunday was the Inaugural Rimfire Fly Nationals.  Both days were very well attended with 86 Positions shot Saturday by 65 individuals and an amazing 49 Individuals shooting the Rimfire Fly on Sunday.  See below for full results in both versions of excel, the tabs along the bottom have each event.
March_2016_Fly_Nationals_Published_Results.xls
March_2016_Fly_Nationals_Published_Results.xlsx

Light Gun (and outright first place) was won by Tim Pavey with 260.03, with Barry Tucker and Peter Merriman taking 2nd and third.  Best Target was Peter Merriman with 59.02 and small group was Tim Pavey at 1.1605"

Heavy Gun was won by Stuart Elliott with 258.01, with Jason Rushton and Annie Elliott taking 2nd and third respectively.  Best target and small group both went to Dave Groves with a 58.01 and a 1.34" group.

Rimfire was won by Anthony Hall with 268.04, with Kathy Dundas and Brian Mitchell Taking 2nd and third.  The highest ranked Junior was Keegan McGrann (4th Outright) with 262.04, a great effort considering he is under 15 !!. The 15-18 age group was won by Scott Dundas with 242.03.  Small group and Best Target went to Anthony Hall with a 59.02 and a 1.236" Group.

Overall a great event and with the rimfire so well supported and enjoyed by all, I am sure there will be more rimfire Fly events in the future.

Well done Tim for Saturday, a great result mate !!

Cheers,

Anthony

A great result for all winners and the Wing Attack group from WA- welcome.

A special mention for Australian Munitions who also contributed to the Prize winners giving a prize for first place on both Heavy and Light rifle and overall winner Barry Tucker for both days.

To have valued contributors recognized in the sport assist with future sponsorship so thanks Lucy from Australian Munitions we really do appreciate your sponsorship.

BRT Annie and Stuart Elliot the primary sponsors for the match are to be congratulated for another year of great sponsorship and it is really important we all recognize this value to our sport.

Cheers Les

What a great shoot.

Congratulations to all the winners in all the events, it was certainly a who who's of benchrest shooting in attendance. The weather was kind to us on both days but conditions were still testing for the shooters.
Overall the shoot was very well run so congratulations to Dave Grooves for organising things, the target crew was a standout for me as they changed targets like a F1 racing team changing wheels - they were still running right to the last card  after 2 long days of shooting - Outstanding.
The sponsorship was fantastic with prizes going to every shooter who competed on both days so a special mention must got to Stuart and Annie from BRT who put up most of the prizes. These guys are not just champion shooters but champions in the way they help other shooter and competitors, champions in the way they handle themselves on the range and now champions in supporting the National Fly championships - Well done.
Looking forward to comming to Canberra again to try to learn those range conditions and enjoy the company of all you guys again.

Thanks

Dave Dundas

Yes...A great weekend all round.

We have to be happy to have sponsors such as BRT who have sponsored this event for some time  & now Australian Munitions kicking in ,which I should say happened because Les approached them and they responded.

A really good story here with Tim Pavey taking out overall winner with a great score of 260 .03. It's a lesson to all because Tim has been coming to just about all these shoots for a few years, driving from his home near Cessnock to Melbourne, Wagga & Batemans Bay as well as Canberra. I think he even drove over to Monarto in SA for the unofficial shoot last year. His scores have been increasing for some time.
With a couple of great 300 meter wins just recently it seemed clear that a 500 victory was just around the corner. Well...what a way to come into bloom,..at the National Champs no less. Australian Munitions should also be happy because Tim used their 2208 powder in his 6 BRX.

Great effort Tim...trigger time is everything!

Special mention to the guys fromWA....massive effort to get across. Relatively new to the 500 fly but it didn't stop Jason Rushton from shooting a great score of 253.05. Just shows what enthusiasm can do as I think they shoot the 500 at club level every month. So too do the guys from Brisbane who are coming ahead in leaps and bounds because of the efforts of Vince Vaina & his crew.

Seems to be a theme developing here....shoot more and get better at it!......Maybe club level 500's from time to time could be the go!!??

I'll get a bunch of pics up over the next few days.

Regards,
Belly

I was on the same bench as Annie and Stuart, It must of been my coaching that done it.
I left my stool at the range, I will get it later, but the range officer found 3 Flag spikes still out the front, they are now on my stool in the office.
Check your flags and see if any are missing, and let me know, or ring the range 62417313.

To all the Fly guys and gals,

We would like to thank all the fantastic people we met over the weekend at the Fly Nationals, we really did feel like part of the family, everyone welcomed us with open arms and were more than willing to help us out with equipment and advice on the range, even giving us there hard earned tricks and secrets on how to shoot  better at Canberra.
A special thanks to Dave Groves for his huge help and assistance before the match, even though he was a very busy man he still took the time out to answer my calls and emails whenever I had a questions, his pit crew were amazing to. A big thanks to BRT Annie and Stuart for the impressive and generous prize table they donated  we were  super impressed. Also a big thankyou to the guys on the 500m Fly Shooter forum for your help and advice on our many questions  leading up to the Nationals.
The Nationals was a whirlwind of great people and tons of fun for us, we've come away with plenty of  great memories and friends. We will be back for sure.

Many Thanks from the West Aussie Fly Shooters

Re: 2016 Fly Nationals - Results

Stuart Elliott
Thank you all for the nice comments here and good wishes. We are grateful too that almost everybody personally thanked us for our sponsorship at the presentation or after and we both feel that it is a very nice  and respectful. It is also a measure of the difference in many ways between most of the Fly Shoot crowd compared to many of the other shooting events etc. Sorry to say it, but...........

We really did enjoy this years event again and it helped make the 2 day drive home easier. Congrats to Tim Pavey (LG and overall) who has been plugging away hard for a long time. Just reward.
For some people its all about the winning and for most they know that they won't. No shame in that. In fact as long as both types apply rule 10 all are equal in my view.

We originally gave Dave Groves a commitment to sponsor the first 5 Nationals while they are in Canberra before the usual SSAA Nationals rotation starts. But we have decided to continue with sponsorship of this event in March till at least the 30th anniversary match in 2020. We feel sure this event will remain the feature match in Australia annually regardless of where Nationals are at. With help of Les and Anthony and others there will be some additional sponsor who will add to the pool and fill the gap to reduce the financial stain on just us.  So we look forward to continuing the co-operation.

There are many a good people who are contributing to our sport of Fly Shooting these days. But I would like to single out one and thank Les Fraser for the work he did arranging that ADI sponsorship. I know that occasionally a few people like to "rip in into" Les at times. Maybe on this forum, maybe in person. This is one of the disadvantages of being the man who holds his hand up. Comes with the territory. But its time for a good pat on the back for the man because I do think maybe a few people out there still do not know the level of his passion and personal sacrifice for the sport. For this ADI stuff he actually got up at 4am on the 10th, drove from the other side of Bathurst down to Horsley Park to collect all that stuff. This was necessary because ADI in their wisdom decided to send it there. Then drove back home and off to work for the day. I know he didn't say anything about that because he doesn't but we know it and that is why I am telling it. That is a personal financial and time cost that he just continues to put in for all of us in this sport. Thanks Les.

Stuart Elliott

Re: 2016 Fly Nationals - Results

Just thought,
Looking at this years results it appears like 60 of the final results were above 200 points. 32 in HG and 28 in LG. That is fairly impressive actually and demonstrates the real "step up" this event has come to. I'm adding here the top 10 results of 1990. That was a 10 target match so basically...halve those scores for some relativity and you see what I mean.

I do recall that match well. Herb Valerious and myself shot our 6PPC short range BR rifles using 66gr bullets.  Mine was a Stolle Panda which I purchased in 1981 and brought back from the USA. Was the first one in Australia actually. Didn't count for much at 500m though. I do recall not seeing one shot on paper all day and occasionally just seeing those little grey splatters on the plate. By the way the "plates" were not what we have today. They were the Metallic Silhouette Rams fixed in position. So a little larger.
For Herb and I if we got a hit on the plate we were feeling lucky. We both knew that in calm conditions  like early evenings the 6PPC's would group quite well out there. We both practiced and managed groups a little larger than 1" at 500m in nice calm at about 7pm. The problem was, practice is..just practice and match days are not at 7pm.

But I recall one target I did do well with was because the first sighter actually hit the Ram to my left. Yeah it was blowing a bit from the right that day. So feeling frustrated I decided just 'get into it quick". Went up top, aimed on left edge of the target to my right and ripped off 5 shots quickly. Was pleased when the target crew arrived and i saw my 5 shots actually on my target for a change.
Bottom line is we all had a good time. So much so everyone wanted to try and make something of this event.
"As yeah sow, so shall yeah reap"

So thanks to Max's coaching we do slightly better these days :)

Hi All,

Well what an event, amazing to see so many shooters under the one roof. Was great to see the WA guys come over and enjoy the experience, but for Jason to finish 2nd in HG at his first major registered event was a truely excellent outcome.

Congrats to Tim for an awesome performance with his 6mm BRX, with the amount of mirage to win with his 6mm was a phenomenal achievement. As usual Stuart (mr consistent) kept the pointy end honest and turned out to be a really close finish. Congratulations to everyone who shot and enjoyed themselves on the day.

Thanks to Stuart and Annie and BRT for the amazing prize pool through their sponsorship of the Nationals, I know we all appreciate what BRT does in giving back to the sport. I agree with Stuart in that Les does deserve a huge thankyou for his efforts in securing ADI as a sponsor through the websites. It is easy to sit back and wait for something to pop up but for Les to go out of his way in approaching ADI is a great outcome for the sport. Thanks also to Lucy from ADI for the support of Fly Shooting we appreciate it greatly.

Look forward to seeing you all again soon at Wagga.

Regards,

Deane
