OK my first crack with the Berger 105 huntings from 6br Norma over 2208, jumped 10 thou, at 200m, winds reasonably light gusting at about 10kmph. 30.9 grains was my best group of .665" and a vertical of only .365 centre to centre. 30.6 had a four shot group of .478" but the 5th shot blew it out?? I'm thinking of now testing at 30.5, 30.8 and 31.1, picking the best group then changing seating depth either side of the 10 jump. There were no pressure signs at 30.9. Any thoughts appreciated. Hi Jason,
The Berger VLD's are just excellent bullets, I'm using the 105 VLD Target in my BR and the 140 VLD Targets in my 6.5x55 Ackley. In both rifles these bullets like lots of jump, 80 thou in the BR and 90 thou in the 55 Ackley. I tried the 140's in my Father In Law's rifle today for the first time using 90 thou and it shot very nicely at 100m. More testing to come.... I used the 140 VLD Hunting in my 55 Ackley to shoot out to the mile last year and the accuracy was every bit as good as the Target version in testing beforehand, maybe a little better even, velocities seemed to be more consistent with the Hunting version, it might be the softer jacket that does this, that would lead me to believe that the Hunting version might be superior in chamberings which stress the projectile less like the BR. I think the Target versions are harder to enable them to be really pushed by those that want mega velocities. I suggest trying 80 thou jump and going from there, have a read of the Berger website and this article refers: http://www.bergerbullets.com/vld-making-shoot/ Cheers. Dave Groves. |
Hi Brian thanks for your info,
I've been using the 105 targets myself for the past 8 months and they've shot very well for me, unfortunately im almost out of them but have 1000 105 vld hunting's im hoping to get shooting as well as the targets. My load for the targets is 30gn 2208 jumped 15 thou, Id read and heard that the vld targets and hunting's would generally shoot the same using same powder charge and jump, I tested 2 five shot groups with the hunting's ,the vertical was an average of 1.5" at 200m on a good day, so starting from scratch with hunting's.( the targets would group 1/2 to 3/4" at 200m and around the inch at 300, sometimes a bit better depending on day) Its encouraging that you found the hunting's in your 55 Ackley to be as accurate or even a little better than the Targets, hopefully this may be the case with my BR fingers crossed. Ill give the 80thou jump a go, Thanks again for your input Cheers Jason Rushton |
hey Jas
i measure those loads i tested with you the other day the top one with the 4 in a group was 1.622 inch group but that 5th one killed it but the bottom left is my smallest group yet just wish that wind didnt get me on the bottom right :( of Mick runs .015 off lands with his hybrids, i'm at .010 which was bottom right on pic. Top was .015 and bottom left was .017 |

hi mate the vertical dispursion on the right hand target is actually the better load if you are doing load development the flatter the load the better the accuracy you have a 1.4" vert as apposed to a .94 vert.
When i do my load development i have mutliple aim points on a fly target BACK. i am at these and fire 4 shots only and measure the best three for Vertical dispursion and this is the load i use. cheers Les
shooting well is more a mental control of your thoughts than just pulling the trigger........
