Nationals Format

Deane Thrower
Hi,

Sitting here thinking about the Nationals and HOF etc and thought I would see what you guys and gals think about this.....

I'm loving the format for next year being LG one day HG the other, and I believe the Nationals should be a bigger event than the others to really seperate and enhance the competition and make it THE event of the year. Don't get me wrong I'm not detracting from those events but I think the Nationals should be the highlight of the season.

So to go one step further, now that the different classes are on seperate days what do you all think about the Nationals being a 10 target match, like the original event. Having LG and HG on seperate days opens the opportunity to do this theoretically should time etc permit.

It would certainly make for an interesting day having 10 targets to shoot and be consistent for (5 is hard enough for me) but I think it would be great to take the Nationals back to its grass roots.

Keen to see what you all think

Regards,

Deane

Hi Dean,
We shot a 10 target match in Canberra a few years ago…it was intense!…a big, big day, especially for the target crews & scorers. It was, though, thoroughly enjoyable.

As a shooter it was certainly do-able…Dave Groves who ran the show may have a different perspective!!

Belly

Hi,

I am all for ten targets, but I think it should be an occasional or special match, Not a nationals.

The nationals should be shot in the same format that we practice and compete all year.  That is 5 targets Light Gun and 5 Targets Heavy Gun for those that shoot both.  For my money, it should be side by side and all in the same day, with Rimfire on a separate day..... but each match organiser has the opportunity to run it however they like...that will make each nationals unique.

I know Dave mentioned a 10 target plan for the 30 year anniversary !! That would be fun.

Cheers

Anthony

Belly, Anthony

Thinking from a match organisers perspective I think you may be dead on Belly, it would be a huge day for them and the target crew.

Anthony, I see your points also although from my point of view I think having LG and HG on different days is a plus. By that I mean those who don't own 2 guns can shoot both classes without sacrificing 1 due to cleaning, at least I know this was my issue at Batemans Bay last year.

I think having a stand alone match could be a great idea, maybe something like the McKinley Classic or Memorial as I know we all miss Big Jims face on the firing line, and we all know what the FLY meant to him.

Would be great to see what Dave thinks.

Cheers

Personally i think a ten target match for a National Event has some merit given the Nationals will be one class per day. I have shot the fly (10) target and the Half fly (5) targets. The sport since the Ten target event has grown enormously but now it is going to be one class per day i think it is certainly a draw card if you love to shoot.

A ten target match has strategy in relation to cleaning time thinking about where to place your groups for the match having seven great targets and three poor ones won't yield fruit it is about consistency over the entire day.

I note Anthony mentioned we should shoot the Nationals like we shoot registered matches however that is not the case anymore with one class per day for the National's so a ten target system be facilitated.

There are always differing views on matches but ultimately match organizers have plenty to do for the days events. Running a ten target match would see more work.

For the competitors however it would give them a chance to catch up on a bad target or two and still be there at the finish line.

I think ten would be great, so what do other competitors think about it.

Just my opinion.

shooting well is more a mental control of your thoughts than just pulling the trigger........
