We will be holding another Fly shoot this Saturday at the Silverdale range, as the range will be closed for the June long weekend it will be shooters last chance to practise prior to the state Fly titles in Batemans Bay. This is a 200y Rimfire event and visitors are most welcome. Last month we had an excellent turn up so be sure to arrive between 8am and 8:30 to setup bench\targets as we start shooting at 9am. At the presentation we will discuss the proposed changes that have been proposed to remove Rimfire from the rules. I have been emailed the proposed rule changes and will distribute so that you may contact your state representative to have your voice on keeping the Rimfire event alive. In addtion, Western Sydney Rifle club are holding the Autumn Invitation 50m Rimfire event on Sunday at Hylands Rd Greystanes. This is a great event held at our new shooting range and will be attended by shooters from as far away as Orange. Both open and Hunter class will be shot and the entry fee in just $20. There is nothing better to improve your long range shooting than shooting in a short range benchrest event. Let me know if your interested in attending either event. Dave Dundas WSRC Club Captain |

Very good conditions for shooting greeted the shooter. The morning was cool and not a cloud in the ski with just a tight of a breeze from right to left. Unfortunately a number of our shooterswere sick with the flu and missed out on an excellent day. A couple of shooters (I was one) had problems getting below the new baffles in front of the shooters and in my case had to shoot with no rear bag to get low enough, I thought it would be near impossible to shoot well that way but it was very surprising. Andy (Range Manager) is going to fix the baffles before our next shoot in July As things warmed up the mirage came into play and had some of the shooters winding back their big scopes. Ed McGrann led from start to finish and set a new range record and as far as I know the highest score in a Rimfire event anywhere with a score of 287.9. Ed also had best target with a 59.1 and I had best group which was just under an inch at 0.91” and Matt Riches hit 2 flies on his first ever Fly shoot – well done. 1st Ed McGrann 287.9 2nd Dave Dundas 260.3 3rd Alex Dundas Jr 255.4 4th John Gilbert 244.2 5th Geoff Edmonson 240.0 6th Matt Riches 213.2 The State Titles are on in Batemans Bay next month and a few of us will be heading south again this year to try our luck. Hello Steve i have fitted a set of modified blocks to my Anschutz 54 to get my scope centred at 200 yards -- those blocks were machined to have 25 MOA -- they work very well and my scope adjusts very well -- if you come to the Batemans bay 200 shoot you can have a look at what i have done

Hi Steve
I have shot the Rimfire fly here in Sydney for over 25 years and run the event every month for the last 20 years and have seen just about every thing possible on types of scopes and scope mounts. Ideally if you were building a Fly rifle then you would incorporate a 20 MOA rail or mounting blocks as John has mentioned but often shooters don't want to drill into their actions to mount rails or bases themselves. There are a number of scope mounts these day which allow for varying adjustments of the post heights to get you up 10 MOA or more. Sports Match mounts are one such example of someone who does these, but there are others. Most of our shooters use there rifles for both 50m competition and the 200y Fly and want to easily adjust the scope between the two. The old rule to get on target at 200y is to setup up your scope to be 14 inches high at 50m - put 2 dots 14 inches apart and when your aiming at the bottom one and hitting the top one then you good to head off to competition. Best to ensure you have a few extra clicks on your scope in case you are shooting into a wind or up hill - even a cold morning makes you shots drop a bit quicker due to the air denisty. I have seen a couple of 12 yo girls use a 6x power scope (with a spotting scope) on a old BRUNO and still put in a reasonable score so a 20 power is fine - shots will be hard to see with anything less than a 24x if conditions are not ideal. I used a poor quality 24x Tasco for more than 10 years and when I first started I shimmed the back of the scope with a GUM leaf that was under my feet at the range - I could not get on target so had to do a quick fix in 5 mins before the match started. Gum leaf worked fine and was on the Bruno for at months till I upgrade to some cut coke cans. The coke cans are great shims and I have used them on every rifle since for the family, 2 to 3 shims work out about right. No need to tighten down a Rimfire scope to hard else you might bend a scope tube, but never seen a bent one yet on a Rimfire - Would not consider this for the bigger calibers of course. I guess what I am really saying is just have a go with what you have and if you enjoy it then you can spend money as needed down the track. I know a few guys tell me they are building a rifle or setting up a scope but every month there is a excuse why they could not make it. I borrowed a rifle at my first Fly shoot and loved the event so I was hooked. Our next Fly shoot at Silverdale is on Saturday the 9th July and a bunch of us are heading down to Batemans Bay State titles in 2 weeks. Drop me a PM if you want more details about the Fly shoots in Sydney and I can add you to the email list. Hope to see you on the range, Dave Dundas |

Hi Mate,
Off the top of my head, I think it is about 34 MOA from zero out to 200.... So if you have a scope with 40MOA adjustment that gives you 20 each way, so you won't make it......and you don't want to be at or near the limit of travel.... a 20MOA rail means that the scope only has to provide the remaining 15 and you should have no issues getting from 50-200 easily enough.... I would say 15-25 MOA rail depending on scope choice.... If you have a March scope with a country mile of adjustment, you should get there out of the box.... I use a Weaver T36 and a 20 moa rail....
