Time for a little progressive thinking to hopefully gain more shooters to the fly events. I would like to discuss introducing a tactical trophy to run alongside of the current fly matches.
Anthony can this be done in the programing of the score sheets. This could possibly be an entry enter under the followoing conditions. 1/ shoot at the same time as the regular fly comparative to weight class 2/ must be shot of a bipod 3/ must have a magazine capable of loading a round 4/ sand bag only at the rear of the rifle This would not interfere with the current match but may encourage new shooters to try their skills at 500m fly and hopefully lead them to shooting the fly with a proper match rifle. your thoughts Les

G'day Les,
I started shooting the Fly to get more long range experience and use out of my "tactical" competition rifle so I can see how this may work, I don't know whether it would take off but it does I suppose warrant at least consideration. When we started doing it, back in the late nineties and early noughties we didn't need a separate class for "tactical" rifles, although back then it wasn't uncommon to see somebody turn up and use a rifle over a Harris bipod, it doesn't happen very much these days! Cheers. Dave Groves. |

Hi,
Yes, can easily be handled in the scoring spreadsheet, no worries. May be we could make it a combination of factory and tactical class.... it would be unofficial anyway, but basically allow anything that is not a custom benchrest gun to enter that class.. Ie if it has a custom action, you must shoot from a Bipod, if a factory action and stock, you can use a front rest etc... We could allow bedding, trigger and barrel changes in factory class, but a stock change (or a custom shop job with 3" forend) would make it either light gun or tactical from a bipod....... Caliber and twist rate must match that model from the factory etc...... I can see merit in the idea..... Cheers Anthony |
Well tactical could well bring in more shooters thats for sure. I dont think you can run it in conjuction with a factory class but thats just my opinion I dont run any shoots so its not any extra work for me.
Tactical will stand alone if you get the numbers, I wouldn't bother with weight class just tactical style rifles either factory or custom built and "run what ya brung" shot off bipods with a rear bag only. Muzzle brakes are fairly common on tactical rifles that may become a problem. Anything that encourages people to come to match is a good thing and a few trial runs would be a good test if well advertised. |

Yep, agree with all that.
Have one of those..... now I will have to take off or cover up my muzzle break. Grrrr :) :) Stuart Elliott

To keep this thread moving forward what i am trying to achieve is more shooters without any more difficulty in running the shoot, i don't want to see it move into a situation that people start to massage the rules to suit a win eg rests. The three main rules about load from the magazine and shot off a bipod and one only rear bag makes sure that the degree of difficulty is there across the board for all who shoot the class.
Usedguns there are always folks buying and selling these rifles so it makes good sense to capture that corner of the shooting fraternity without impacting on the true grass roots of the fly competition. When folks travel long distance they really are searching for bang for their buck. I think some time ago there was a proposal from Wagga to host the "The Great Fly Weekend" whereby there would be a 300m fly 20m rimfire fly and the 500m fly. This would have certainly been alot of fun hopefully it isn't completely off the drawing board yet. Now back to business for the tactical shoot firstly would Canberra like to have this as part of their Federal cup fixture if not that is ok and what other club would like to see this held at their clubs. The main reason is it must be marketed properly and a decent prize for the winner. For Rules can you folks put your thinking caps on and make some suggestions that way we can have it nice and clean from the start and then away it goes. The rules need to be simple and short and without confusion. les

I've been on the edges of a few conversations re this subject quite a few times and agree that inviting owners of tactical rifles to shoot the 500 could be a good way of getting more shooters interested in our sport, indeed there have already been quite a few of these rifles at some of the matches I've been too and some of them shoot very well..
Owners of these rifles don't appear to expect to be right up there matching it with the best bench rifles but they understandably get pretty excited when they shoot a good target. Most of the issues these guys have seems to be about their magazines and how they can be used. They are clearly disadvantaged by the bipod set up as the efficiency of the return to point of aim and reload ( in single shot fashion ) is severely eroded compared to a bench rifle using a front rest. I'd be happy to let them fill their magazines. Most mag's will be 3 or 5 shot so they will need to go to single shot or reload the mag at some point during the relay anyway. Might make it a bit tricky for the range officer checking the displayed rounds or am I thinking too much about detail....? Love to hear what the owners of these rifles think!! Belly

i dont think there iz anything saying u cant use a magazine ,,,,correct me if im wrong,,,i think it iz to do with bullet
length and they dont fit,,,az fore the rounds to be displayed ,load the mag after the commence fire call,,only takes 20 seconds,,,,,anyway let them run with mags ,,,cheers |
