The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

David Dundas
All

Would love to hear about the Good, Bad and Ugly of your local range, might be some good funny items or good info - need your responses.

SSAA Silverdale range

The Good - Range fully staffed and professionally run. The winds are kind most of the time.

The Bad - Range fees and tea\coffer cost too much. The road in can be a challenge after heavy rains. Mirage in the summer months are tough.  Caliber restrictions so no more bug guns.

The Ugly - Shooters who attend to just get in their min number of shoots or those groups of guys who pass one gun amounst each other - none of them can hit a thing!

Hyland Rd Greystains

The Good - modern range with an excellent club house, 2nd only to SISC in NSW. Day and night time shooting and cheaper then Silverdale to shoot.

The Bad - Rimfire 50m only, winds swirl around range and off the walls and baffles. Shared range with SSAA, WSRC, North Rocks rifle club and Castle Hill rifle club so a roster is standard.

The Ugly - Dam cold at night in the winter months. You must check your wodden bench has not been placed on the runner mats in front of the firing line else they rock when you lean on them.

Would love to hear about some of your local ranges. I hear stories of ranges where the locals don't like outsiders, Bneches that rock and roll or ranges are covered in leeches or mosquitos, winds are almost impossible to shoot if your a visitor.

Keep it light so as not to offend,

Dave

OK ill have a crack at this one,

PFRC (Perth Field Rifle Club) W.A.

The Good- Great bunch of people at the club, especially the Fly Shooters.Excellent Air-conditioned club house and a neat and very well maintained range with 20 benches plus much more..

The Bad- Range only 400m, but an extension to a 500m  is on the cards, fingers crossed. Mirage can be exceptionally bad.

The Ugly- Some of my scores when there's no mirage or wind!!!?? ( And Mick.. you know who you are).

Cheers

OK
Wagga SSAA Range

The Good- I'm biased but here goes. One range that caters for a whole range of disciplines only 12 minute drive from town. A picturesque location with great facilities that are getting better all the time. Great people as well.

The Bad- After spending $120K getting the place reopened having the calibre restrictions as well as velocity and energy restrictions.

The Ugly - The bloody baffles ruin what was a beautiful view!!

For the sake of the odd squeeler I will stipulate that these are MY views and do not represent the club, the branch or the SSAA.

Chapo

The range inspections are getting tougher and tougher, one range I shoot at has an inspection in Dec and a bit of work is needed if we are going to continue with a particular disiplain.
The baffles not just affect the view but if its anything like at the Sydney Shooting centre or Hyland rd then it can be real tricky when the wind blows - seems to push wind downwards and makes for more swirling on the range. Seen flags just spin 360 degree over and over on windy days.
Will get to Wagga to shoot one of these days.

Would love to hear more stuff about your ranges you all shoot at.
