Wind Flag Poles

Deane Thrower
Just wondering what extendable poles you guys and gals use for ranges like Canberra and Batemans bay. Any feedback would be appreciated

Cheers

HI Mate,

Good question... Unfortunately there is no off the shelf product (that I am aware of anyway), that will do the job.  You will have to make/modify something to work and there are plenty of options.

I use aluminium twist adjustable camping poles (available at camping stores), cut the point off them and insert aluminium sections (available as rod from metal suppliers), and use electrical glands exactly like the Barry Edgley flag system to secure the inserts at the right height, then insert the Edgley poles and tops into those......

Others use painters poles and fabricate a way to get flags on top....

I will be interested to see what others have to share.

Cheers

Hi dean ,
Mate there are so many variations of wind flags , I use lure retreavers and put styrofoam balls on top with streamers which works well the best way to judge what you like is to have a look along the many flag lines at a shoot. No one will mind and you get a good look over them. I will try and get a picture up on here for you to have a look at.
shooting well is more a mental control of your thoughts than just pulling the trigger........

Would have to say.... I think Barry Tucker's pole set up takes the cake.....

Either that or Barry is just bloody good at setting them up !!  Make sure you have a look at his at the next shoot !

Thanks for your replies lads,

I have just purchased a new set of BRT flags, so I am almost fully setup to fly shoot. I will indeed have a look a Barry and Les's setups, it's interesting when you factor in all the complexities of the Fly. Very little of the gear used is run of the mill and requires a lot of "personal" touches to have the ultimat setup, which I think is very unique to this discipline.

If ingenuity got you points in a fly target the top end of the order would be stacked. Look forward to seeing you all again at the Batemans Bay fly.

Cheers

G'day Deane,
I was just wandering around Bunnings & noticed a heap of pool cleaner poles...2 different sizes @ 12ft & 16ft for about $35.00 each. Aluminium & extendable. Just the sort of thing that could be adapted to a flag pole....Might be worth a look!!
Regards,
Belly

Belly,

Thanks for that, I'll go and have a look tomorrow. I have just spent 9 days working in Ivanhoe so I am still trying to adjust to civilisation lol. Just layer my eyes on my new BRT flags, what a great product. Can't wait to set them up and starry practicing. Batemans Bay in June here I come.

Thanks again champ

Deane
