Fly Shooters Doing well in other Disciplines

Hi,

Looking around at results, I notice that Paul Read won the "F Open" class at the Centenary Queens in Canberra recently
With  180.22, 171.04, 118.08, = 469.34.  This comes on top of his record Sub One inch group shot at Wagga.... certainly a good year for Paul.

I see also that Rod Davies won the R.A. Rolph Aggregate in Canberra for "F Open" with 405.27, This comes after a 500m fly Heavy Gun and combined 2 day aggregate win at the Batemans Bay Fly shoot.... also great stuff.

I am sure there are many more great stories..... if you notice some, please share.

Cheers

Anthony

Hi Paul,

Yes, you are correct... the two I mentioned are both F Class shooters... I guess as this is primarily the 500 Fly Web Site and both of these guys have recently won shoots or shot records.... I was simply recognising results of theirs that I noticed in other disciplines.

Recognizing good performance and encouraging others to try more disciplines are good things for the sport in general.

500M Fly indeed challenges the finer accuracy of equipment, techinque , components and reloading.... but there are lots of great ways to enjoy shooting competition...... from 10m air rifle.... .22lr benchrest (BR30), 200, 300 or 500 Fly, F Class or F Open... all are great sports.

Cheers

I think you will find that most of the fly shooters have come from other areas and some fly shooters are heading back to other disciplines as well. Once you get to the top 5% of the discipline you are in then you always look for the edge. There is some great results from fly shooters and Anthony is right we should recognise their efforts as all folks that shoot the fly are friends and an easy going lot. That is what makes the fly so much fun the only pressure you ever feel is on yourself for about 7minutes after that it is sledging, taking the piss, or just discussing the pro's and con's of wind reading.

Just to add to Paul's comment yep laying on your guts to shoot is much more uncomfortable than sitting at a bench but i still managed to get in the NSW state team this year for Target rifle and for short range benchrest i managed to shoot as many rounds as i could find and win the Light Varmit 100yd event.

All this shooting is just a blast and i would encourage all to try new things, enjoy shooting whilst it lasts.........
Les
shooting well is more a mental control of your thoughts than just pulling the trigger........

This time last year I was shooting a BRNO hunting rifle at 200yds at Silverdale. Was holding a full target high just to get on paper.

Now have a 6BR gun, probably importing another; and have bought a camper trailer to get to events.

I will likely be doing more flyshoots and 1000yd BR in 2014 than I will be doing F Class, for a change and new challenge. I am trying to get a few of my F Class mates to come with me to some Fly and 1000yd BR shoots and will still try to get some flyshooters to have a go at F class sometimes. I dropped 2 of my F class barrels in to Matt Paroz at the ACT Queens to be cut down to make LG weights so I hope to have some more toys for next year.
I agree some flyshooters could benefit from doing some F class to learn wind reading, while I know that I will be doing more work on my gear to try to get the groups down enough for Fly and BR.  I think both disciplines can learn something off each other.
