Scope for 500m

Greg Hughes
Hi all,

A mate and I are looking at getting into Fly, both 300m and 500m. I am getting my 308 re-barrelled to 260 and wanting to put a new scope onto it. I was looking at getting the NF 12-42 BR but at the store I am looking at they are steering me toward a Sightron 10-50 saying it is better value for money and will do the job just as well. I can afford either one.

I saw some posts on here form 2011 but nothing more recent. Has anyone had any recent experience with Sightron or has there been no change where the NF is still always recommended ?

Thanks in advance.

The nightforce would out number the sigtron 50- 1 on the line I would reckon.

Most are either nightforce or march.

From what I have looked though with my own eyes the sigtrons are hit and miss with glass quality and the eye relief can be more touchy.

I had a fixed power 36 big sky and it was only OK.

Regards

Cam

Hi,

Not that I am an expert on the matter, I would agree with Cam. Both March and Nightforce rule the firing line at fly shoots, and most other disciplines for that matter. I personally have a March 10-60 and love it. The night forces are a great scope also and very price competitive
Just doing my part to reduce the fly population!!!!

HI,
I have both scopes you are looking at, The S3 is really a big jump up from the big sky version different glass altogether.
Sightron does represent good value for money, Yes the S3 is a bit more touchy on the paralax very fine adjustments you are either in or not, but shooting at a known distance is an advantage so set it once and u should be right, I would say you wouldn't be let down going the S3 10-50x60 comapared to nightforce benchrest model.  I also have the Nightforce competition model which i believe is much better to look thru than the benchrest model, thats my eyes anyway.
But as far as the 2 your are comparing for my eyes the Sightron is there with NF Benchrest model no problems.
Just one thing to consider is the weight, if your building a light gun then look into that cause the S3 i think is a bit heavier than the NF..

Hope this helps and not confuses you a bit more,
Cheers

Thank you for your info.

I think it looks like Nightforce for me. I had been into 3 different gun shops in Brisbane and one tried to sell me a Burris XTR 2 saying it was better, one told me Sightron was better and the third did not carry Nightforce any more so I was beginning to wonder if it was all a sales pitch or if Nightforce was no longer the quality I had read about.

One cannot argue with what you see on the bench.

Hi Greg,

At most competition shoots you will see the leaders such as Night Force and March, Leupold competition series to name probably the big three. I guess what every budget range you seek there are good scopes to look at but Benchrest Competition is the best way to see for yourself what scope you want.

If you come to a fly match i am pretty sure anyone will let you look down range through their scopes that way you can choose a reticle and scope configuration that suits what you need.

When i buy a scope i think about long term return for the money, March and Nightforce certainly retain their value and give confidence at the bench.

Some reticle for you to look at are MARCH MTR 1, Nightforce NP 2DD most manufacturers have photo's of these and many others check out MARCH Website http://marchscopes.com/
http://www.nightforceoptics.com/

hope this helps Les

Hi Ian, I ended up ordering the Nightforce so will see how it goes. I liked what I saw on max magnification with one I looked through so fingers crossed. Should be ready for me to pickup in a few days. I went with the NP2-DD reticle. How have you been enjoying the fly shoots ?

I am a long time sightron user and am currently using a 10-50 on the centerfire and 8-32 on the 22 .

In 2010-2011 when buying from the USA you could have a 8-32 sightron at your door for $800 and a 10-50 landed for under 1k .

Now that they go over the $1000 limit you have to pay duty and gst when importing and also when purchased locally the sightron s3 10-50 is a $1600 od scope!

When spending that much coin I would buy the nf for the resale value .
If I could get more sightrons at the old price I would keep buying them .

Side by side I believe they are much of much optically and my sightrons have never failed to track repeatedly.
