How many guys would be interested in a training weekend at a venue that hosts 500m fly events. Anthony, Myself and Peter
Van muers did this a couple of years ago however only a handful turned up for it but i think those that did learnt alot over the topics. Anyway perhaps those wishing to progress their scores would benefit from such a training session.. cheers Les

glad that there is interest in this now for a venue where would be a central location for people to come to put your thoughts up and we can see if that range would like to host it. I guess it would be a great opportunity for new shooters to find out a few tips and put them to the test and other more experienced shoots can learn from each other. No person has all the answers so it will be an interactive event for everyone.

No easy answer on that Les.
What comes to mind, is it practical to hold this sort of session the Friday before a Fly shoot as people are already travelling to the venue and the range already has allocated the time for practice on a Friday. Not a perfect solution as week days are problematic as you would expect and it will be hard to attract new shooters. Just an idea to ponder. Cheers Glen |

Hi Glen i think this has merit perhaps organisers can put their thoughts on your suggestion. But a very good idea.

Hi Guys,
Just a suggestion from my point of view. With the amount of preparation that goes into a fly shoot, for most of us that is.....the week leading up to a shoot is already pretty hectic. From my point of view if it was held in between shoots, those attending could have feedback (targets, experiences) from the previous shoot that could be used to identify the areas they need assistance with, attend the training day....apply this to the prep for the next event and hopefully benefit at the next shoot. I feel the day before would make the time frame so tight it would be easy to not retain the information based on the comp the next day....if that makes sense. Just my 2 cents worth Deano

Les,
This may seem bias but Canberra is relatively central for NSW shooters, and closer for those wanting to travel from VIC etc than Batemans Bay. The benefit I see is it's a large range, open every day that I am aware of except comp days and has large indoor facility for class room environment etc. Just an idea

Hi Deane
Good points on the day before idea. I understand and agree that the week and in particular the day before a fly shoot are very hectic... So more pondering required. To me that's why these forums are essential to get the ideas on the table, get the different points of view, thrash them around and get the best outcome for all. Cheers Glen |

Glen,
100% agree, in a perfect world the day before would be an awesome idea as it would guarantee more participants. Who knows that may be the most popular idea. The forum certainly is the best place for this because it means we can all put our point of view across and it's free, no phone calls etc. Looking forward to catching up again mate, always a laugh. Cheers Deano

Some very good suggestions all round i think a designated weekend would be of benefit but if this is not a goer than most places a shoot on Saturday and Sunday perhaps spread it out over all the different venues and do something on the Sat arvo after the match before we head out for dinner that may be an idea.
I think there is any number of ideas out there so more are certainly welcome. Les

Gday Deano,
Hopefully you can make the Nationals, we have a definite 5 shooters heading over from WA. Were booked in at the ibis Styles holiday park in Eaglehawk which you recommended, looks good on the internet and only a few minutes from the range by the looks , also hired a car from airport to get around in for the four days were there, cheers for the generous offer though. One thing I was going to ask is if someone could bring some spare Carbon and Copper cleaner as we aren't permitted to fly with those particular fluids, I will be happy to pay whatever it costs. Cheers Jason |
Jason,
Great to hear mate, eagle hawk is about 5-7km from the range so your laughing. I have plenty of Butches Bore Shine, but if there is something in particular you use let us know and we will be able to get something for you. Luke Easter from ProCal and Stuart and Annie from BRT will be there. So if you want something in sure if you contact them they would be able to bring what you need. But as I said I have plenty of Butches. Look forward to seeing you guys there Cheers Deano

Now back to the training day
Format will be two days Day One Setting up rifles Setting up Dies Case Prep loading for accuracy / moly coating/ bullet tipping. Bullet prep. lunch Setting up Bench Rests tracking of rifles setting up flags Reading conditions Theory Day Two Accuracy testing of loads Reading the wind Reading Mirage Understanding group centre and True wind Zero Understanding condition effects on bullets Shooting at varying times Brief and closing. I suspect 100 rounds will be enough to get you through but that is only a guide if you want to shoot more then no worries. I will have a camera at the range to see the shots witch will be used to demonstrate the theory. Some have asked what would be covered i think these are the major elements to get shooters producing better scores. If anyone has a particular element they feel is not included then please post. cheers Les
